Overview

Taurus is a large-scale public sculpture installed at the Durham County Administration Building II, developed during a period of national reconsideration around monuments and public memory. The project responds to this context by creating a contemporary landmark rooted in shared identity rather than singular narrative.

Drawing from the Taurus constellation and Durham’s longstanding association with the bull, the work reinterprets strength, resilience, and stability through an abstract, forward-looking form.

The Challenge

The project was commissioned at a time when many traditional monuments; often tied to exclusionary or painful histories; were being removed or reexamined. The challenge was to create a work that:

  • Resonates across a diverse and evolving population

  • Avoids static or singular historical narratives

  • Engages a prominent civic site adjacent to a major governmental building

  • Balances symbolic meaning with contemporary form

In addition, the sculpture needed to respond architecturally to the scale and materiality of the Durham County Administration Building, while establishing its own visual identity within the plaza.

Approach

Working in collaboration with David Wilson, the project was developed through a concept that merges cultural symbolism with spatial and material exploration.

Utley led the design development of the sculptural form, focusing on how structure, material, and light could communicate both physical strength and transformation.

The design draws from:

  • The Taurus constellation (nine stars represented through embedded lighting)

  • The bull as a symbol of Durham’s identity

  • The history of the site, formerly home to the Hotel Malbourne

Rather than a literal representation, the sculpture abstracts these references into a dynamic system of interlocking metal forms.

Context + Narrative

The site’s history plays a critical role in the conceptual framework. The sculpture references the former Hotel Malbourne, which once occupied the location and was originally proposed to be named “Taurus.”

By reconnecting this unrealized history with Durham’s identity as the “Bull City,” the work bridges past and present; transforming a historical footnote into a contemporary civic marker.

The Work

The sculpture is composed of interlocking aluminum elements that form a powerful base, gradually deconstructing as the structure rises. This transition creates a visual movement from solidity to openness; suggesting both grounding and aspiration.

Materially, the work engages its surroundings through contrast and reflection:

  • Polished aluminum surfaces mirror the adjacent architecture

  • Patinated sections introduce color, referencing cosmic imagery and diversity

  • Integrated LED lighting activates the sculpture at night

The lighting system traces the nine stars of the Taurus constellation, transforming the piece after dark into a luminous, atmospheric presence that reflects Durham’s energy and nightlife.

Impact

Taurus offers an alternative model for civic monuments; one that shifts away from static representation toward abstraction, inclusivity, and layered meaning.

At the civic scale, the sculpture anchors the plaza and establishes a strong visual dialogue with the surrounding architecture. Its materiality and form allow it to function both as a standalone landmark and as an integrated component of the built environment.

At the experiential level, the work evolves over time:

  • Reflective surfaces change with light and movement

  • Color and texture shift throughout the day

  • Lighting transforms the sculpture into a nighttime beacon

Culturally, the project reframes Durham’s identity through a symbol that is both familiar and reinterpreted; connecting strength and resilience to a broader, more inclusive narrative.

Rather than commemorating a fixed past, Taurus creates space for ongoing interpretation, positioning public art as a living part of the civic landscape.
